Connected

From evidence to action

How can the UK create a digital society in which everyone can participate and thrive?

Over the past year, The Connection Project has brought together organisations from banking, telecommunications, broadcasting, technology, government and civil society to answer this question.

Our first report, Misconnected, examined the evidence.

It found that while the UK has invested heavily in digital infrastructure, millions of people still face barriers to participating confidently in an increasingly digital society.

Connected builds on this research.

It sets out a practical programme for creating a digital  society that works better for everyone.

Rather than asking how to get everyone online, it asks how we can ensure everyone can participate as more and more essential services become digital.

Connected:
How the UK can build a digital society that works for everyone

  • Misconnected highlighted the barriers preventing millions of people from participating fully in an increasingly digital society.

Connected takes the next step by identifying practical actions that can increase participation and create better outcomes for individuals, communities, organisations and the UK economy.

  • One of the most distinctive aspects of Connected is the breadth of organisations involved in its development.

Representatives from banking, telecommunications, broadcasting, technology, government and civil society have come together behind a shared vision of a digital future that works for everyone.

The report demonstrates what can be achieved when organisations with different perspectives work towards a common goal.

  • The report sets out ten practical recommendations designed to strengthen digital participation across the UK.

These recommendations recognise that improving participation isn't the responsibility of any single organisation or sector.

Creating meaningful change requires collaboration between government, businesses, regulators, charities and community organisations.

  • The report argues that digital participation benefits everyone.

When more people can access services, participate with confidence and use technology independently, communities become stronger, services become more effective and the UK is better placed to realise the full value of its investment in digital transformation.

A practical plan

Building on this evidence, our second report sets out a ten-point programme for government, industry and civil society to create the conditions for high digital participation across the UK.

Help shape what happens next

Connected sets out practical recommendations, but creating a digital society that works for everyone will require ongoing collaboration.

We're keen to hear from people working across government, industry, charities, community organisations and public services.
